Fastnet 2021

Anyone got an idea how the exclusion zone will work this year?

Not sure how exactly to implement it. I think you have to pass S or N of _both_ gates, in which case defining the entire area as forbidden won't be optimal.

Last time around there was a strong preference for the North route so that was not an issue, but now both options look viable on the way out.

Just saw the notice of race in my inbox, not sure what to make of it

The buoy CASQUETS SE that you will have to leave at port.
Or
The buoy CASQUETS NE that you will have to leave at starboard.

The buoy CASQUETS NW that you will have to leave at starboard.
Or
The buoy CASQUETS SW that you will have to leave at port.

So it's on the way back only (like last year) and the gates are not linked? But there are invisible gates in the race data. Still not sure what to make of it.

Yes on the way back only, with :
The buoy CASQUETS SE AND the buoy CASQUETS SW to leave at port.
OR
The buoy CASQUETS NE AND the buoy CASQUETS NW to leave at starboard.

You're sure this exclusion zone is only for the way back? I kinda don't see the point of an exclusion zone if it's only valid in one part of the race

So I guess they dramatically changed the C40 polars at some point? I remember these boats being able to point very high... like TWA 36 and maybe evdn 34. They're very different boats when TWA 50 is preferred.

It seems they did it in June, for the Globe40 race, see this thread by FlyingPhil

Thanks. I'm not enjoying these boats... They feel like fast versions of the caravel. I guess they'd be fast downwind, but this year's Fastnet is all upwind.

I remember this debate from last year. But, can you dip in between buoys 5 and 6 after you have validated 5, as long as you pass the right side of 6?

In Dashboard I see there are lines connecting 5,6 and an invisible mark on the shore. I don't remember those being there last year.

Suppose you violate this invisible line, what happens? 5 invalidates?

I remember that too... And I recall that someone outside the top 100 proved that cutting it worked, and posted an image of their course... But no one running near the front attempted it. And that makes sense because... If you were running 20th and won the race by cutting the marks, everyone would notice and VR would probably DQ you. Especially this year because they've stated multiple times and ways that you must respect the zone.

So in this case, my guess is... Maybe they fixed last year's mistkae... Maybe they didn't... But it isn't worth the risk to try to find out unless you're far enough back for no one to notice what you did.

Hello,
Will you modify the router to take into account Roseaven 4 buoy (south Scily) and the exclusion zone?
As the rule say: buoys 5 NW and 6 NE by the north or 5 SW and 6 SE by the south
Thanks in advance

It already accounts for buoy 4, unless you have "ignore gates" turned on.

The exclusion zone is tricky. The router can't link two gates. I could define it as proper exclusion zone, but i don't have the logic ready, and it's a bit too late now.

ok, no worries, thanks for your work :)

Hi guys, unfortunately after having passed the buoy 5 NW, I missed the buoy 6 NE and the result was that now I have to go back to buoy 5 (activated an no more green) and pass it again. Any other with the same unlucky experience? thanks in advance
UPDATE: after 10 min of sailing back direction buoy 5, VR activated again the buoy 6 and the 5 was green again…. Can’t sail in such a condition!!!

Bit late for most but unless you have ignore gates ticked, the router sends you due E from Casquets NE buoy for 30//40 mins.

Too late for me, I assumed it was for a better wind angle further down the track in a dying breeze and wasn't that fussed about double checking. Dots on the map suggest I 'm not alone :(
