gate crossing question

is it allowed to cross a gate / pass a mark and, after it turned green, turn around and cross again from the opposite direction and carry on? or does the game engine somehow notice this and invalidates your prior crossing?

as an example, gate 1 at maitre coq: it seems you have to carry on going south around the island to go to mark 2 as there are invisible gates on the way, but if hypothetically there wouldn't be any additional invisible gates, would it be possible to turn around and sail to the north of ile de re to mark 2?

If you pass back through the same gate, in the wrong direction, without validating a different future gate first, then I believe it will un-do your validation of that gate. Just like in real sailing.

The only way to do it is if the end of a gate is on an island and you double back on the other side of the island, so that you're returning around the end of the gate instead of through it.

Off topic: I saw your fantastic sailing through the islands going North at the Nord Stream! Very well planned and executed, very few jibes, congratulations :-)

Not an expert but I think you can do it.
I remember one case in the Beneteau cup on spring 2020. After the buoy on a small rock that had to be passed keeping it on the left, the vast majority of the boats continued by circumnavigaing Minorca going North. A smnall group just went around the buoy anticlockwise and navigated between the rock and Minorca to the next gate (that was the arrival) by the south of Minorca. Both routes were good, and the group that went South gained a considerable advantage

Good memory. That happened while I was asleep, so I didn't notice people doing it until I was too far along to double back. This is actually a perfect example of the scenario I was describing. You cannot double back through the gate itself... but... In this case, the buoy that marked the north end of the gate was on Illa de l'Aire, off the SE corner of Minorca. The course approached from the West, so the fleet all sailed through it Eastbound. Most of the fleet then sialed North along the East coast of Minorca before turning NW to the finish. A few very observant navigators observed that they could instead turn sharply around Illa de l'Aire, allowing them to go back along the South shore of Minorca before heading NW toward the finish. They were in more wind with shorter distance.

The key was that the buoy was on the little island... So it was possible to go back without passing back through the gate. That's ok. But you can't go back through the gate. Going back through the gate will negate your original validation of the gate.

Thanks for your compliment on Nord Stream. I'm pretty unhappy about running aground twice earlier in the race. If I had been able to race clean, I'd be contending for the win. It will be nice to get some sleep. I don't usually stay up all night for races, but with only 9 waypoints as a max, I had to be awake several times last night to get through that challenge.

I feel your pain mate. I was bouncing off a rock that I game plenty of room to for 40 minutes yesterday. The coast was NOT where VR displayed it. Super frustrating.

thanks a lot YM (and gavi)!
my kudos as well for your Nord Stream routing...didn't even cross my mind to go so far north...when I looked at your trail afterwards I couldn't believe my eyes...so simple and effective...genius!
