


I am maximising my VMG to a mark using 'boatSpeed*COS(angleToMark)'.
However, when the mark is inside the tacking angles but not directly upwind, the optimum VMG to the wind and the optimum VMG to the mark will be different. In a race, we always sail to the wind and spend longer on one tack. My question is, what are the limitations to the cosine formula and is there a better optimisation routine?
I understand the SS optimises by minimising the distance to the mark over all possible routes.
