I am maximising my VMG to a mark using 'boatSpeed*COS(angleToMark)'.
However, when the mark is inside the tacking angles but not directly upwind, the optimum VMG to the wind and the optimum VMG to the mark will be different. In a race, we always sail to the wind and spend longer on one tack. My question is, what are the limitations to the cosine formula and is there a better optimisation routine?
I understand the SS optimises by minimising the distance to the mark over all possible routes.

One of the reasons to sail towards the mark first during the race is that in real life the conditions change and in a possible wind shift you can be in worse situation if you take the other tack first.

That does not matter when winds are known and fixed in advance. But you could always apply your practical knowledge to the suggested strategy - it will work well for the longer tracks.
