If you set a very far distant WP in the game, will the boat take a straight rhumb line or follow a great circle route?

There are times it appears the routing is suggesting just heading straight for a target, but to do that requires constant small bearing adjustments. Like right now, I can lay the blue line perfectly over the routing by putting my cursor at a point 1000 miles or so ahead. It would take 10 small bearing adjustments to sail that same course overnight. Would a WP be a set it and forget it solution?

Waypoints are Great Circle, so quite useful in that scenario. Only problem is they are limited in maximum distance and you have to move them every day ;-)

So just take the direction from the blue line and place a waypoint in that direction. Distance does not really matter.
