Hi,

Is it possible to modify the starting date ? Vr announces the start of the race on the 6th of November at 1pm.

The start was reported because of stormy weather in Britain on sunday.

Cvetan, is it possible to put a gate into the router to not allow us to go South of Rio until we are West (or South) of the turning mark? Is the gap between the turning mark and the mainland large enough for the router to be able to figure that out?

The lead group is projected to get to Rio around 4 or 5 AM in my timezone, and without such a gate, I'd have to wake up at 4 AM to get a routing... I'd love to be able to get the routing without waking up if possible... :-)

The turn is too sharp for the router, so a gate won't work. I'd place one right from the start if I could.

Remember, the router can't make a step backwards, i.e. closer to the origin than the previous one. That's one of the thing that makes it fast enough for online service.

On a second thought the route to Cape Town is likely to continue down the coast with the current forecast, so it might work, but I'll have to check.

Or maybe you can artificially make the Guandu River 20 nm wide and 200 nm long so we can set starting points upriver and route to Cape Town from there. ;-)

Added the gate, and it works to some extent, but:

- You have to be North of it when you check, because it's defined as N-S gate

- The result may or may not be optimal, depending on the weather conditions.

already pas the Rio de Janeiro gate, but the routing is trying to bring me back to rio instead of targeting South Africa.

Did I need to do something so that the next target is shown (instead of the last one ?)

If you want to convince yourself... then you have to believe the Low will not develop, or will develop with significantly different timing, or will route itself above Ireland where people riding it will have trouble getting down to the finish. It's far enough into the future that these are all possible. That just isn't the forecast right now.

That coast is usually risky. If you want to take a risk, it's a good way to do it. If you're unhappy with your standing, and are ok risking losing 2,000 spots for the chance to get up to the front, then it could be fun. But the odds are against it.

It did not look too bad few days ago. I even felt bad for a while for giving overconfident advice. But then, I'm playing this game for 10 years now, and don't remember a coastal route working out in either direction.

The problem with routing in doldrums (or any unstable weather) is that the prediction is always much better than reality because the router searches way in a fixed wind field, but in reality that field changes all the time and you can't really follow a fixed route.

Indeed, was worth a try, I was already 6-9 hours behind the fully kitted out boats anyway, but the sage advice proffered above proved to be exactly that.

I've never seen that route pay off either but took the gamble anyway as there seemed to be a big time gap to the next tier of the fleet. I was approx alongside BigBird when I headed coastal so will be curious to see how many places I dropped when I trail in 24hours + behind him :)
