It does. It's the reason you can choose ProWinches option, which gives a different penalty when activated...

I saw penalties, but last time I didn't notice that in the monitor. So now I am not shure about that any more. Did they change the rules or not? I will see next time. Maybe.

my dashboard indicated about 30% penalty for iteration following last sail change earlier today (distance traveled dropped from ~.76 to .54 NM for the 2 min. cycle then back to ~.76).

with pro winches it is 75 s at 50% speed. when that falls within two updates, your average speed over those 120 s wil drop by 75/120*50% = 31%. (31% off .76 nm = .52 nm plus some rounding errors)

the 75 s could also be spread over two update cycles but you will still loose the same distance. in this case you see the remaining sail change penalty time in the first update

A friend has just checked that the penalty is still active when you force the exit of the AutoSail by manually choosing the same sail you are carrying, even if there is no real sail change.

When sailing in increasing/decreasing winds at optimal twa using full options, how useful is the Spinnaker?
E.g. if I move from windspeeds of 17.8 to 19.5 knts during one hour in Clipper race, would it be better to go directly from LG to HG sailing with a "bad sail" for a while instead of taking the extra sail change penalty?
