What happens if you end up in 50 kn winds? In real life I would want to avoid this to play it safe and protect my boat. Do you get a penalty in the game? Does the boat get damaged or the more wind the better?

In the polar, boat speeds max out at 35 kn. After that they start to decrease, which is realistic IMHO. The decrease after 60 kn is very steep. This limit could well be at 50 kn.

if you check the polar at http://toxcct.free.fr/polars/

you will see that boatspeed start to drop above about 35 kts.

you cannot enter more windspeed than 70 kts and than you still have a little speed left.

so avoid winds above 40 kts, I would say

Or do we not have a surf in the VR as we have no waves?! Very confusing.. I'm just a newbie in this virtual race:)

And than the other part of my question...... can the boat in the VR get heavliy damaged or wrecked in winds above a certain limit?

In VR, consider we sail in calm water. Only the wind matters.
So, no waves, no currents, no surfing, no wind disturbance close to the shores either...

In that regard, no boat damage, as you can understand.

It's less visible with the monohulls, but with multihulls you have to be even more careful not to capsize, so performance drops more with wind speed.

With monohulls you mostly get fleet compression in front of the depression, and late boats tend to drop off the ride.

I remember one of the Jules Verne trophy attempts (maxi trimaran) where compression was also happening at the back side of the low because the high wind slowed you down a lot. At one point I was in a small group like 500 miles in front of the pack, 20 days later it was a 1000-boat pack in the front. (It was the game with the icebergs, for those who remember it)
